This county is in need of a coordinator. If you can spare a couple of hours a month, please contact Carla Clifton to adopt this or another orphan county in TXGenWeb.

This site is a genealogy and local history website and has been an integral part of The TXGenWeb Project and The USGenWeb Project since 1996.

We are saddened to report the death of our County Coordinator, Rob Yoder. Rob had volunteered with us for 25 years and will be greatly missed.

This site is dedicated to Cynthia Samples - 1939-2015

Welcome to The TXGenWeb site for Castro County, Texas. This site is part of The TXGenWeb Project, operated by volunteers and dedicated to putting genealogy research online free to researchers. My name is Rob Yoder and in January 2016 I took on the task as County Coordinator for the Castro County website. I have been with The TXGenWeb Project since 1998, connected with Tarrant and Ellis Counties. I want to let everyone know that I have no research interest in Castro County and I live some 360 miles away in Fort Worth, Texas. I am sorry, but for those reasons, I will not be of much help with your research. For the very same reason, I am in need of your assistance. Any resource material for the county that you could contribute would be greatly appreciated.

Castro County Coordinator - Would you like to help?

Castro County is located in the western Panhandle on the Texas High Plains. The county was named for Henri Castro, the empresario who was consul general to Paris for the Republic of Texas. Castro county, Texas was created August 21, 1876 from Bexar District and organized in 1891. County seat is Dimmitt.

If you would like to help out with the website, just a little bit or a whole lot, please speak up. I would like to appoint one or more Assistant County Coordinators. If someone more qualified comes along that would like to take charge, I will be more than happy to step aside. I believe that the website should be managed by someone who has roots here or currently lives in or near the county.

Castro County Coordinator - Would you like to help?

VOLUNTEER: There are always volunteer opportunities in becoming a County Coordinator in the TXGenWeb Project. If you are interested in adopting a county, please check out the Orphan Counties list and then contact Carla Clifton. If this is too much to bite off at one time, then contact any existing County Coordinator and ask how you can help them.  They may need someone to transcribe records, photograph cemeteries, or do Look-Ups out of books you own or have access to. The time you devote is up to you.

SURFING: We can always use another hand at Surfing TXGenWeb county websites. This is a program where volunteers surf a set of counties once a month to help select a website worthy of being named County of the Month.  Contact Laura Gregory Roberts, the Committee Chairperson, if you might be interested. You do not have to be a county coordinator to volunteer as a Surfer. Best of all... This only requires about 2 to 4 hours per month of your time.  The County of the Month is judged based on this Basic Criteria.

Speaking of the County of the Month, if you think that Castro County TXGenWeb should be considered for this award, please put in a good word for us on the County of the Month Nomination Form. Thank you.
