Sacred Harp Singing
The Annual Cass County Sacred Harp singing convened in the Court House Saturday and Sunday. The singing was organized with Ector Hall, President in the chair, J.S. McLeod was elected Secretary, George Funt and I.L. Hall were selected as committee on arrangements.
Singers were present from Cass, Bowie, Camp, Morris, Panola, Marion, Titus, Upshur counties, also Ark. And La. were represented with singers.
Among the singers were some thirty five or forty leaders in music, many of these leaders are outstanding leaders in music, of them nationally known.
One of the outstanding and notable features of the singing is the fact that many of our younger people are learning this great old music and will carry on as the older singers pass on. These younger ones will take up the music and perpetuate that demonstrating the fact that a good thing can never die.
The singers were entertained in the homes of our people, this was a mutual pleasure between the entertained and entertainers. In this connection we made special mention of the Jackson Hotel. Mrs. Mattie Jackson the proprietor with her big heart overflowing with threw her doors wide open for the entertainment of the singers. The co0-operation of the people of Linden in entertaining the singers was the best yet and was very much appreciated by the committee. These singings are always opened and closed with prayer.
J.D. Boon, George Fant and S.L. Henderson voluntarily acted as a committee to see that everyone was cared for.
On Sunday the large court auditorium was crowded with eager listeners. Prof. R.E. Bartlettt with his quartet, consisting of Mr. And Mrs. Melvin Fowler and Gervis Fowler sang some beautiful and sol stirring quartets.
The leaders of music ranged in age from nine years to eighty. Little Mr. Earle Crawford, son of C.C. Crawford of Beckvill, 9 years being the youngest. This little man led the music in a great way and received a big hand encore from the audience. At request S.L. Henderson made a talk at the close along the line that the mind of man and music will live on throughout eternity, stating that people like these singers will sing and rejoice with the Angels in the years to come. The talk was highly appreciated by the visitors and homefolks. The singing was closed in prayer and everyone departed for home looking forward to next year.
