RILEY'S CHAPEL
Also known as County Line
Located 7/10's of a mile over the Upshur County line into Camp County.
Going north on 259 out of Ore City, turn left onto FM557 (you can only go left). Follow 557 past the junction of
2796 a little ways
and County Line Baptist Church will be on your right. Go into the
driveway of the Church and you will see the cemetery to the side of the
Church. **There is a
green sign on 557 that says: RILEY CEMETERY.
Our thanks go to Maribeth Buce for the reading of
Riley's Chapel Cemetery!
Thanks to Merry Smith for the pictures!
As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes
when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves, fire ants, or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly underground.
Our area also has many graves only marked
with iron ore rocks and even many unmarked graves. There are headstones
that have long ago been destroyed by the elements or
even vandalism, and are hard to impossible to read the
details. We would appreciate it if you would let us know if you did not find
your relative which was buried here, and
would appreciate your letting us use the information you know about them. With
the combined efforts of us all, we can make
the Camp County website bigger and better.

J J A "the 845" | We don't have a clue what this stone is about. If anyone knows, please contact Sheila Pool. UPDATE: Thomas F Sachse has offered the following possibility for the meaning: If we assume the stone marks a grave. Then the letters JJA are likely initials for the person’s name. The stone may mark the gravesite of a confederate soldier. McCulloch from Texas commanded a Division that formed in Arkansas. The First Brigade of Arkansas was under the command of Col. McIntosh. A brigade is composed of many regiments of varying troop sizes. The First Regiment Arkansas Mounted Riflemen under the command of Churchill had 845 men. I have heard veterans speak (WWII), for example they may just say they were with “the 82nd” and it is understood to mean they were with the 82nd Airborne Division. I suspect since the Regiments had unique numbers of troops for initial muster that this grave marker which may have only intended to be temporary used “the 845” as it is simpler to carve in a limited space rough surface stone than trying to carve The First Regiment Arkansas Mounted Riflemen. Because there is no date, I speculate the family did not bury or the stone was temporary.

Ayers (1817 – 1853). She married John Riley (1833-1906). They were parents of John Morgan Riley (1878 – 1948), a daughter, Sam L. She applied for a Confederate Widow's Pension 20 Jan 1927 from Camp County, Texas which was approved 28 Jan 1927 which seemed miraculously quick not on Mr. Riley but on her first husband, William Van Buren Davis (1841 – 1872) of Habersham, Ga. before her marriage to Mr. Riley. She had two children by Mr. Davis, Alpha Tallulah Davis (1868 – 1928) and Mary Olive Vine "Ollie" Davis (1870 – 1954) that are shown on the 1880 census with the "Riley" last name instead of Davis. No death date on headstone but was 4 Dec 1930 per her death certificate in Camp Co., Tx.
