Welcome
Calhoun County is located on the southern Gulf Coast and encompasses thousands of acres of marshland including much of the north sides of of the bays and part of Mustang Island. The 17,000 acre Powderhorn Ranch is located here in the easternmost portion of the county. The Powderhorn Ranch was a working ranch until 2014 when it was purchased by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation. It was then donated to Texas Parks & Wildlife for a state park and a wildlife refuge (Powderhorn State Park and Powderhorn Wildlife Management Area). But don't worry, there is still a lot of other land and communites that were occupied by generations of our ancestors. The county was named for John Caldwell Calhoun, the seventh vice president of the United States. The county seat is Port Lavaca, located on Lavaca Bay in the northern quadrant of the county. La vaca is 'the cow' in Spanish and the town is named after the river, which was reportedly named by the French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle in 1685 when he saw bison (wild cows) grazing there.
