McMahan
~ ca 1852
McMahan today is located at the junction of FM 713 and State Highway 86.
Originally the settlement, at the Lockhart-LaGrange crossroads, was called Tinney Creek, the name being derived from
Ambrose Tinney who obtained an 1832 land grant in Gonzales. Gonzales County was divided in 1848, with the northern
division becoming Caldwell County.
A Primitive Baptist Church was founded in 1852 and a Methodist Church was established in 1900. Both still have
active memberships. The school, established in 1876, conducted classes in the church. The Tinney Creek community
was also called “Whizzerville” because of an amusing incident in a nearby saloon. Later, application for a post
office under that name was rejected and the name McMahan was selected, so named for Ed McMahan who was an early
settler from Mississippi. Over the years, the town had a gin, drug-store, barber shop, confectionary, domino hall,
and a hat factory. In 1923 a garage/service station was opened that continued in operation for 47 years.
Today there is no longer a post office and the school has consolidated with Lockhart. The community however, is
active with several businesses and a community center.
