 Death of Thomas Farmer

   Thomas Farmer, aged 77 years, 1 month and 8 days, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G.E. James, Tuesday afternoon, June 27, at 6 o'clock, after having been confined to his bed for about two weeks.  His death was due to kidney trouble, though he was suffering first from a spell of billious fever.  He had always been hearty and active, and only since he had an attack of la grippe (influenza) in the spring had he shown any signs of ill health.

He was a man who was loved and honored by the whole people, an unassuming, gentle and kindly man, and a sincere Christian, and an attempt to pay tribute to his character would be futile, as all who knew him know that his life stands as a bright example of how close a man can live to the straight and narrow path when he makes an effort.  The following items in regard to his life were furnished by Rev. Fullbright, his pastor:

   Thomas Farmer was born in Caroline county, Virginia, May 19, 1828; came to Caldwell in 1854; joined the Baptist church when a boy.  Was married to Mrs. Mary Smoot in 1855, and to them were born two children, of whom Mrs. G.E. James survives.  Mrs. Georgia Lamkin, his step-daughter, and two brothers, A.J. Farmer, of Waco, and J.W. Farmer, of Caldwell, also survive him.  He entered the Confederate Army in 1862, serving in Colonel Allen's regiment, Captain Douglass' company, to the end of the war.  He had been a resident of Caldwell for the past half century, and his life was a part of the history of the town.  He was a deacon of the Caldwell Baptist church for thirty years, a zealous Christian, always at his place in the church services, punctual in the performance of his duties, a man of spotless character whose praise is in every mouth.

   The funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, and a large crowd of friends witnessed the last honors paid to one whom all loved, and followed sorrowfully to the old cemetery his remains.  His death will leave a blank in many places where he has always been found with a cheery word for everyone, and no one who has gone to rest since Caldwell has been a town will be remembered longer, nor his influence do more for those who have been associated with him.  His life’s work was well and faithfully done, and he rests now in a happier world, to which he has looked forward with bright anticipations.
