Annie Marek Schoppe

Mrs. Annie (Marek) Schoppe, 86, last surviving member of the oseph Marek family, expired at the home of her son, Julius Schoppe, of Birch, Friday February 28.

Coming from Czecho-Slovakia, she landed on the soil of her adoption July 4, 1867, and made her home in Caldwell shortly afterward.  She was married to fred Schoppe the same year and made their permanent home in the Birch community where she continued to reside until her death.

During their happy wedlock, 12 children were born, 8 boys and 4 girls, 4 of which died in infancy.  Of the remaining eight children of the family, Joe and William died during the "flu" epidemic of 1918-19 and rosie in 1924.  Also preceding her in death in 1927 was her husband, Fred Schoppe, an ex-Confederate soldier.

Surviving children are:  John, Birch; Frank, New Ulm; Thomas, Port Arthur; Mrs. Annie Junek, Snook, and Julius Schoppe, Birch.  Forty grand-children and 53 greatgrand-children.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3:30 at the home and at the St. Mary's Catholic church with Rev. father Thos. Matl officiating.  burial was in the St Mary's Catholic cemetery, with a large concourse of sorrowing friends attending.  Pallbearers were Lee and Elo Schoppe, Adolph Brinkman, Frank Langlotz, John Havemann, and Julius Junek.

Funeral arrangements were under the diretion of R.F. Polansky of Lyons.
