Hugh Brevard King

Hugh Brevard King was born in Rowan County, North Carolina, on 2 March 1782, one of eight children born to John and Rachael (Young) King. On April 19, 1812, in Rowan County, NC, Hugh married Miss. Rebecca Gill, a daughter of William and Susannah (Young) Gill. Hugh and Rebecca’s first two children were born in Iredell County, NC, before they moved to Lauderdale County, Alabama, where their last seven children were born. Hugh B. King and family emigrated to Texas in 1837 and settled in that part of Milam District of the Republic of Texas that is now part of Burleson County, Texas. Hugh bought a large tract of land and engaged in farming. Here he became a prominent man and was elected Probate Judge, a position he had also held in Alabama. Hugh was well educated and had studied law although he had never practiced that profession. For over forty years he was a great worker in the Methodist Church.

Hugh and Rebecca King had six sons and three daughters namely: William Alpheus King born 23 December 1813, in Iredell Co., NC and died 29 April 1888, in Milam Co., Texas; John Ethelbert King born 6 May 1815 in Iredell Co., NC was a Methodist Minister and County Judge in Williamson Co., Texas before moving to Belton, Bell Co., Texas in 1890; Susan Rebecca King was15 March 1817, in Lauderdale Co., Alabama; Hugh C. Alwen King was born 31 August 1820, in Lauderdale Co., Alabama, He was County Judge of Burleson County, Texas, died 23 January 1905, and is buried in Caldwell’s Masonic Cemetery; Rachel Margaret King was born 5 November 1823, in Lauderdale Co., Alabama;  Rufus Young King was born 12 July 1828, in Lauderdale Co., Alabama, was a Representative of Bell Co., Texas to the Texas Legislature after having been the first County Judge of Lee Co., Texas in 1874; Henry C. King was born 16 December 1830, in Lauderdale Co., Alabama; Oran J. King was born 16 November 1832, in Lauderdale Co., Alabama, died 19 October 1845, and buried in Caldwell’s Old City Cemetery; and Elizabeth Jemima King was born 30 January 1836, in Lauderdale Co., Alabama and on 26 January 1853, in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas, married Newell F. Porter.

Judge Hugh Brevard King died 3 September 1843, in Caldwell, Milam County, Republic of Texas, and Mrs. Rebecca King died 11 August 1857, in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas. Burleson County was created in 1846 from Milam and Washington Counties. There is a marker with only H.B.K. on it in Caldwell’s Old City Cemetery. Since Hugh B. King and their son Oran King are buried near each other and their probate records are in the Burleson County Court House, it is thought that Mrs. Rebecca King is buried in the same area of Caldwell’s Old City Cemetery, although a grave marker has not been located.
