Daniel W. Ragsdale, a native of North Carolina, was born 4 February 1791, and died 25 May 1857, in Aberdeen, Monroe Co., MS. He married Nancy Haynes Greer, a daughter of Henry and Susanne Greer, who was born 1 February 1804, in Georgia. Children of Daniel and Nancy are:

1.     Mary A. Ragsdale, born 13 October 1825, in Aberdeen, MS, married 3 September 1844, in Aberdeen, MS, Richard Harrison, a physician, born 13 March 1821, in Alabama. Their children are: Eliza E. born about 1845, Anna W. born 20 June 1845, and Isham Harrison born about 1853, all born in Aberdeen, MS. Mrs. Mary (Ragsdale) Harrison died 27 November 1855, and was buried on the Old Cemetery at Aberdeen, Monroe Co., MS.

Richard Harrison died 1 November 1876, in Waco, McLennan Co., Texas.

2.     Susan Elizabeth Ragsdale, born about 1829, in Monroe Co., MS, was marriage to Charles Franklin Gates on 5 March 1848. Their children are: William Gates born about 1850, Daniel Ragsdale Gates born about 1851, Charles Gates born about 1853, Mary Harrison Gates born 22 November 1855, Franklin Gates born about 1859, Susan Gates born 10 October 1864, and James Gates born about 1866. Charles Franklin Gates was born 20 December 1824, and died in 1866. Mrs. Susan (Ragsdale) Gates died 24 March 1875, in Coahoma Co., MS. On 4 July 1870, Ragsdale Gates, age 19, was living with Mr. and Mrs. James W. Ragsdale in Burleson County, Texas. On 14 June 1880, Mary Gates, age 23; Susie Gates age 18; and James Gates, age 14; along with Mary Ragsdale, age 74; were living with Thomas J. and Margaret Beall in Brazos County, Texas.

3.     Ruth Tennessee Ragsdale, born about 1831 in Mississippi, married 5 October 1852, Alexander Hamilton Davidson in Monroe Co., MS. In the 2 July 1860, Census of Colorado Co., Texas, in dwelling #317 was: A.H. Davidson, age 43, male, Atty. at Law, born in N.C.; R.T. Davidson, age 30, female, born in MS; Mary E. Davidson, age 6, female, born in MS; Ann R. Davidson, age 2, female, born in Texas; Green A. Davidson, age one month, born in Texas. Anna Ragsdale Davidson, daughter of Alexander Hamilton and R.T. Davidson, was born in 1857 and died on 21 December 1860, in Colorado Co., Texas.

Soon after the war broke out, A.H. Davidson, who had campaigned hard for secession and who had represented Colorado County, Texas at the secession convention, secured a commission in the Confederate Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and set about raising a battalion for service in the New Mexico campaign. The troops he raised, however, were assigned to another command, and he was left in Texas, complaining, but with his commission intact, to raise more men. It was not until October 1862, after Sibley’s army returned from New Mexico, that he succeeded, with the help of his son, William Lott Davidson, and of Samuel Gabriel Ragsdale, his brother-in-law. The younger Davidson had been slated to be a Captain in his father’s original battalion, but had gone off to serve as a Sergeant in Sibley’s army. Lieutenant Colonel Davidson’s newly organized unit remained largely inactive for a year before, in September 1863, it was ordered to Galveston to serve as infantry. A month later, Lt. Col. Davidson was killed in action in action in Louisiana, and Lt. Col. Samuel G. Ragsdale became commander of the unit. Lt. Col. Davidson’s son, William, who had the end of his little finger on his left hand shot off at Valverde and sustained a more serious wound to his left leg at Glorieta, would endure four more slight wounds before the war ended and he could return to civilian life. William Lott Davidson, born 26 June 1836 in Mississippi, was the son of Alexander Hamilton Davidson and his first wife, Eliza Jane Lott, daughter of William and Karenina (Jenkins) Lott. Eliza was born in 1818 and died in 1848. William Lott Davidson survived the Civil War, married Jane Elizabeth Calder, was an Attorney at Law, living with his wife, Jane, in Richmond, Fort Bend County, Texas, on 26 June 1870. On 5 June 1880, William was a District Attorney, living in Richmond, Fort Bend County, Texas, with his wife, Jane, and his two brothers, Green A. Davidson, age 20, and Alexander Hamilton Davidson, Jr., age 17.

Doctor Alexander Hamilton Davidson, Jr. was born in 1863 in Colorado Co., Texas and died 3 November 1902, in San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas. His father Lieutenant Colonel A.H. Davidson, C.S.A., died before his birth and his mother, Mrs. Ruth (Ragsdale) Davidson, died soon after the Civil War. Dr. Davidson was raised by his uncles, Major Samuel G. Ragsdale and Captain James W. Ragsdale, living his boyhood in Burleson and Brazos Counties, Texas. At age 16, he joined the Brazos Bottom Baptist Church at Tunis, Burleson Co., Texas. On 2 October 1893, he married Miss. Celeste Testard. She survived him along with their five children. Dr. A. H. Davidson was interred in the Old City Cemetery in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas. Mrs. Celeste (Testard) Davidson died 25 June 1915.

4.     Sarah Jane Ragsdale was born about 1833 in Monroe Co., MS and was married twice. Her first husband was Napoleon B. Burnett and her second marriage was to John Washington Wilkes.

5.     Lucinda Greer Ragsdale, born 2 April 1833, married Milton Walker Sims on 27 December 1854, in Monroe Co., MS. Milton W. Sims was born 10 January 1831, in Haywood Co., Tennessee, but was raised in Alabama and Mississippi and came to Texas in 1857, settling in Austin, Travis Co., Texas. Mr. Sims served as a Major under Brig. Gen. P.O. Hebert, C.S.A., and was captured at Natchez, MS. After several months of captivity, he escaped, returned to his unit, and was sent to Texas with the rank of Colonel and orders to increase Colonel B.M. Baird’s Battalion to a Regiment. After the Civil War ended, Colonel Sims returned to the practice of law in Texas.  Lucy and Milton’s children are: Daniel Ragsdale Sims, born 26 December 1855, in Aberdeen, MS; Nannie Bell Sims, born 27 September 1857, in Austin, Texas; and Lucy Sims, born 2 April 1860, in Austin, Texas. Mrs. Lucy (Ragsdale) Sims died before July 1870, and Colonel Milton W. Sims died 4 October 1912, and is buried in Bryan City Cemetery, Brazos County, Texas.

6.     Daniel Henry “Dan” Ragsdale, born about 1836 in Mississippi, was a stock raiser living alone on 23 August 1860, in Frio County, Texas, receiving his mail at the Uvalde Post Office. Captain D. H. Ragsdale of Company D, 5^th Regiment of Texas Mounted Volunteers, C.S.A.  was one of the Confederates killed on 28 June 1863, in battle at Fort Butler, Donaldsonville, Louisiana and was buried in a common grave.

7.     Samuel Gabriel Ragsdale was born 6 June 1839, near Aberdeen, Monroe Co., MS. He was a Texas Ranger under Colonel John S. Ford at the outbreak of the Civil War. He served one year then received a commission in Daly’s Battalion of Volunteer Texas Cavalry and was a Lieutenant Colonel at the close of the war. Colonel Ragsdale married Miss. Eula Newell on 8 July 1872, and they had five sons: David, Sam G., Thomas, Newell, and James Ragsdale. Colonel Ragsdale served two terms as district attorney and in 1871 filled an unexpired term in the Texas Legislature. Samuel Gabriel Ragsdale died 5 April 1904, in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas. Mrs. Eula (Newell) Ragsdale was born 17 January 1850, in Tensas Parish, Louisiana, and died 4 December 1928, in Santa Monica, CA.  Mr. and Mrs. Ragsdale were members of the Presbyterian Church.

8.     Margaret Nancy Ragsdale, born 2 March 1840, in Mississippi, married on 2 December 1869, in Brazos County, Texas to Thomas Jeremiah Beall. On 14 June 1880, in dwelling #333 of the Brazos County, Texas Census was: Beall, Thomas J., age 44, Atty. at Law, born in Georgia as were his parents; Beall, Margaret, wife, age 36, born in MS and her parents were born in Tennessee; Beall, Mary, daughter, age 13, born in Texas; Beall, Susan, daughter, age 9, born in Texas; Beall, N., daughter, age 7, born in Texas; Beall, Florence, daughter, age 5, born in Texas; Beall, Thomas J., Jr., son. Age 1, born in Texas; Ragsdale, Mary, mother-in-law, age 74, born in Tennessee as were her parents; Gates, Mary, niece, age 23, born in MS as were her parents; Gates, Susie, niece, age 18, born in MS; Gates, James, nephew, age 14, born in MS; and Remington, E., aunt, age 52, born in GA as were her parents.

9.     James William Ragsdale, born 8 July 1841, in Mississippi, entered the army of the Confederacy as a private in Company K, 23^rd Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A. After being captured, held prisoner for six months, and being exchanged, he was elected Second Lieutenant of his company, was afterward promoted to First Lieutenant, and still later to the rank of Captain. He was wounded at Atlanta by a shell which struck his right ankle on 12 August 1864. After the end of the war, he went to the home of some of his relatives and retuned to Texas in December 1865. From the effects of his wound his leg was amputated below the knee.  After returning to Texas, James bought land in Burleson County and entered into the merchandising business in 1876 at Tunis, Burleson County, Texas. He had married Miss. Florence Goodwin, a daughter of John and Sarah Goodwin, on 19 November 1868, in Burleson County, Texas. Florence was born 27 July 1848, in Virginia. James and Florence had four children: James William Ragsdale, Jr., born 21 September 1869; John Goodwin Ragsdale, born in 1874; and two who died in infancy. In the 4 July 1870, Census of Burleson County, Texas, James W. Ragsdale, a farmer, received his mail at the Brazos Bottom Post Office. James and Florence, their son James W. Jr., age 8 months, nephews Green A. Davidson, age 9, and Ragsdale D. Gates, age 19, along with Walter Ragsdale, age 22, born in Virginia, were living in dwelling number 227.  Mrs. Florence (Goodwin) Ragsdale died 10 September 1874, and was buried in the Brazos Bottom Cemetery at Tunis, Burleson County, Texas. Captain Ragsdale was a Mason, a Democrat, a County Commissioner, and in 1876 became the Tunis, Texas Postmaster.

Captain James Ragsdale married Miss. Lily Fountain in 1878. Lily was born in Alabama to Mr. J.A. and Mrs. Mary Fountain. James and Lily Ragsdale’s children are: Thomas Ragsdale, born about 1877; and Nannie Ragsdale, born about 1878. Captain James William Ragsdale died 18 October 1893, and was buried in the Brazos Bottom Cemetery.

10. Walter G. Ragsdale was born about 1847 in Mississippi and married Ruth Partillo.

Daniel W. Ragsdale, the father, died in 1852, and in 1857 his wife, Nancy, and children moved to Texas locating in Austin, Travis County. On 1 August 1860, Nancy H. Ragsdale, age 37; Margaret Ragsdale, age 18; and Walter Ragsdale, age 12, resided in Austin, Texas.
