Cowan
Cowan Riley Cowan, a son of Samuel Cowan and Sarah Margaret Keith
Cowan, was born on 15 September 1803, and died on 28 February 1887. Riley
married Phoebe Acree on 9 January 1823. Phoebe was born on 17 February 1804, and
died on 12 December 1886. Riley was the first postmaster at Moonhull, Arkansas
and also a Justice of the Peace. Riley and Phoebe Cowan are buried in the Case
Cemetery in Newton County, Arkansas. Their known children are; Stephen, William
Riley, James Martin, Jasper Newton, Elizabeth R., Mary A., Robert Riley, William
Isaac, and Nancy Emeline Cowan.

Stephen Cowan was born about 1824.. He married Emeline Jackson and they
had at least six children.

William Riley Cowan was born on 6 October 1828, and died on 28 May 1865,
in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. He married Zillah Louisa Mayberry on
14 December 1847, in Carroll Co., AR. Zillah was born 25 April 1827, in Carroll
Co., AR and died 31 July 1892,in Jonson Co., Ar. William, Zillah, and their two
year old son Zachariah Taylor Cowan were living in the Sparda TWP in Johnson
Co., AR on 2 December 1850, separated from Riley and Phoebe Cowan by one
homestead. On 23 July 1860, William and his family were living in the Sparda TWP
in Johnson Co., AR. William enrolled in the 2nd RRegt., Arkansas Infantry, U.S.
Army. He caught small pox and died in Clarksville, AR and is buried in an
unmarked grave in the Boston Cemetery in Madison Co., AR. William and Zillah’s
known children are: Zachariah Taylor Cowan (born 2 October 1848- died
24 March 1893); James Henry Cowan (30 September 1850- 12 December 1919);
Phillip Cowan (born 8 March 1852);
Jacob Jasper Cowan (29 June
1854); Samuel Jackson Cowan (b. 6 March 1855- d. 1943 in OK), Jesse E. Casey
Cowan (b. 23 April 1856-d. 26 June 1936); and John C. Cowan (b. about 1860 in
John Co., AR).
James Henry Cowan, a son of William Riley Cowan and
Zillah Louise Mayberry Cowan, was born 30 September 1850, in Johnson Co., AR,
married 26 December 1866, died 12 January 1919, and buried in Cove Cemetery in
Madison Co., AR. He married Martha Emeline Smith, a daughter of William Ashbury
Green Smith and Melissa Jane Williams Smith, born 22 March 1849, died 19 April
1928, and buried in Cove Cemetery. James and Martha Cowan’s known children are:
William Riley Cowan (1868-1956), James A. Cowan (1870-1884), Phillip Thaddeus
Sheridan Cowan, (1872-1963), Simon Uriah Cowan, (1874-1947), Zillah Louisa Cowan
Richardson (1876-1966), Martha Edna Cowan Hart (1879-1971), Henry Harvey Cowan
(1881-1925), Abigail Rosie Cowan Ferrell (1884-1942), Lucy Jane Cowan Martin
(1887- 1911), Ulysses Simpson Cowan (1890-1962), and Ida May Cowan Martin
(1893-1962).
Phillip Thaddeus Sheridan Cowan, a son of James Henry
Cowan and Martha Emeline Smith Cowan, was born 1 January 1872, in Madison Co.,
AR, married about 1890, died 4 November 1963, and buried in Cove Cemetery in
Madison Co., Ar. Phillip’s wife Missouri Caledonia “Callie” Wages, a daughter of
Moses J. and Nancy Womack Woodard Wages, was born 2 August 1873, in Logan Co.,
AR, dies 21 March 1951, and buried in Cove Cemetery in Madison Co., Ar. Their
known children are; Martha E. Cowan Jordan (1892-1914), James Floyd Cowan
(1894-1986), Martin Luther Cowan (1896-1985), Henry Elmer Cowan (1899- 1973),
Bonnie Cowan (1902-1999), Theodore Cowan (1906-1940).
Martin Luther Cowan, a son of Phillip T. S. Cowan and
Missouri C. Wages Cowan, was born 18 October 1896, married about 1923, died 13
October 1985, and buried in Benton County Memorial Park in Benton Co., AR.
Martin’s wife, Cleo Anderson Cowan, was born 26 April 1906, died 20 September
1982, and buried in the Benton County Memorial Park. Their known children are:
William Kenneth Cowan (6 September 1923-8 June 2008); Keith Edsel Cowan (21 July
1928-22 May 1987 in Brazos Co., TX); Jerold D. “Jerry” Cowan, born 2 September
1930 in Pettigrew, AR., died 13 July 2014, and buried in Madisonville City
Cemetery in Madison County, Texas; and Wilma D. Cowan Franks (7 January1932-8
July 1977).

James Martin Cowan was born in 1831 and died on 19 September 1862, near
Iuka, Tishomingo County, Mississippi. He was married to Tabitha Francis Mounce
who was born on 18 November 1835 in Illinois and died on 10 June 1914, in
Arkansas. In the 1870 Census of Johnson Co., AR, Tabitha Cowan, a female age 35
born in Illinois was living in the home of Wilson Wages with her three children:
Sarah C. Cowan, a female age 11 born in AR; Jesse Cowen, a male age 10 born in
AR; and Absalom Cowan, a male age 8 born in Ar.

Jasper Newton Cowan, a Mason and a farmer, was born on 28 June 1834, died
on 9 January 1912, and was buried in the Oark Cemetery in Johnson Co., AR. He
was the 1st married to Catherine Ray Cowan and 2nd married Nancy Jane Ray Cowan,
Jasper had several children.

Elizabeth A. “Betsey” Cowan was born on 4 April 1838, and died on 10
February 1921 in Cherokee County, Oklahoma. She was the wife of Cyrus Anderson
Campbell (1837-1921) and they had at least four children. Elizabeth is buried in
the Tahlequah Cemetery in Cherokee Co., OK.

Mary A.”Polly” Cowan was born 27 January 1851 and died 12 March 1914. She
married Hiram Boen (1842-1902) and their known children are; Zillah, Isabel,
William Riley, James Monroe, and Albert Lafayette Boen.

Robert “Bob” Cowan was born 4 August 1848 in Alabama and died 7 March
1906. He served in Company E, 2nd Arkansas Infantry, U.S.A. during the Civil
War. Robert married Martha Rebecca Wheeler who was born 9 July 1842, and died 5
December 1924. Robert and Martha are buried in the Buckhorn Cemetery in Newton
County, Arkansas. Their known child is Mary Ann “Polly” Cowan, born 14 January
1860, died 24 February 1933, and buried in the Oark Cemetery in Johnson County,
Arkansas. Mary Ann was the wife of John Benjamin Atkins (1859-1922).

William Isaac Cowan was born 28 December 1844 and died 18 June 1928. He
served in Company E, 2nd Arkansas Infantry U.S.A. during the Civil War. He and
his wife, Mary Ann Daniels Cowan (1838-1929), had at least three children; Nancy
Catherine Cowan Mason (1867-1958), Joseph Cyrus Cowan (1878-1969), and Phoebe
Cowan Lewis (1880-1968). William and Mary Ann are buried in
Newton County, Arkansas.

Nancy Emeline Cowan was born on 19 May 1847 and died on 3 November 1933.
