Arthur Eldridge

Arthur Eldridge, born about 1806 in Culpeper County, Virginia, was a son of Thomas and Clara (Morris) Eldridge. Arthur served in Captain Brown’s Company of the Texas Militia and in Henry Wigginton’s Company of Volunteers, 4^th Regiment, General Greens Brigade of The Republic of Texas in 1836. He married Miss. Sarah Ann Hitchcock on 17 October 1839, in Washington County, Texas. Sarah Ann was born 18 July 1821, in Georgia to James and Elizabeth (Davis) Hitchcock. Arthur and Sarah Ann had one child, a son, James Thomas Eldridge, born about 1840 in The Republic of Texas.  Arthur received 1,476.13 acres in Limestone County, Texas, on Robertson 2^nd Class Certificate #318, dated 24 March 1845, and 640 acres of Bounty Land located in Dallas County on 19 December 1845, Certificate #3269.

Arthur Eldridge departed this life in the month of November 1845. Spencer Rice fixed Arthur’s grave in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas, on 18 September 1857. (Burleson County, Texas, Probate Records)  Mrs. Sarah Ann (Hitchcock) Eldridge and Jesse Gilbert Thomas were united in marriage in 1857, in Milam County, Texas.  Jesse and Sarah became Administrators of Author’s Estate and Jesse was made Guardian of James Thomas Eldridge in 1857. Mary J., the widow of James Thomas Eldridge, petitioned the Burleson County Court for relief for herself and their two children, Martha age about 8 and Thomas Arthur Eldridge age about 6, on 14 July 1868.

The graves of Arthur Eldridge, Sarah Ann (Hitchcock) Eldridge Thomas, and James Thomas Eldridge have not been located but they are thought to have been buried in the Old City Cemetery in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas, in now unmarked graves.
