Biographies of individuals buried at the
Brazos Bottom Baptist Church Cemetery

Mrs. Mary A. Batts (born May 23, 1821); consort of Jesse Batts; perhaps Captain Jesse Batts of Burleson County, founder and commander of the Brazos County Minute Cavalry Company (October 1863); (1) perhaps namesake for Batt's Ferry, once located 2.5 miles southwest of Wellborn (1896); near the Ewing Cemetery, close to the east bank of the Brazos River in Brazos County; (2) (Mrs. Mary A. Batts died January 18, 1859).

Lucy Jane Cooper (born December 22, 1871); (Lucy Jane Cooper died February 22, 1895/96).

 

Anna (Echols) Davis, unmarked grave, (born 1837, Texas), daughter of Colonel John Echols and Sarah (Sally) Wright; brother: William; married Dr. William Davis on May 13, 1857, Burleson County, Texas; children:  Lula (Cole), Anna (Annie) (Tabor), Lillie (no children), John, Thomas, Reuben; (Anna Davis died April 3, 1877). (3).

 

Dr. William Davis unmarked grave, (born 1835, Tennessee), paternal grandson of John Davis of Virginia; son of Judge William M. Davis, Sr. of Georgia, and Amanda Malvina Henderson (who married in Sommerville, Tennessee in 1829); siblings, thirteen; (4) married Anna Echols on May 13, 1857, Burleson County, Texas; children: Lula (Cole), Anna (Annie) (Tabor), Lillie (no children), John, Thomas, Reuben; physician; (Dr. William Davis died 1877). (5)

Mary A. (Easley), (born March 5, 1879); daughter of E. W. & C. W. (Cynthia Wilkinson) (6) Easley; (Mary Easley died October 26, 1882.

Colonel John Echols, unmarked grave; (born July 28, 1808, Virginia); son of William Echols III (Sr.) of Madison County, Alabama; married Sarah Wright on June 25, 1834, Madison County, Alabama; children: Anna, William; came to Washington County, Texas (1835); enlisted in the Army of the Republic of Texas at Nacogdoches under Captain John Quitman;  fought in Texas War of Independence (April 21 to July 22, 1836);  street named for Echols in Caldwell adjacent to the Burleson County Courthouse; farmer retail merchant; County Commissioner; (7) donated land for Brazos Bottom Baptist Church; (John Echols died circa 1874/77). Sarah (Sally) (Wright) Echols, unmarked grave; (born August 2, 1809, Madison County, Alabama); daughter of Williams Wright and Sarah (Sally) Mitchell of Madison County, Alabama; siblings:  Matilda (Wilkinson), John M.; married Colonel John Echols on June 25, 1834, Madison County, Alabama; children:  Anna e., William; donated land for Brazos Bottom Baptist Church; (Sarah Echols died October 165, 1874). R. Towles Estes (born date unknown, Virginia); died of consumption;(10) (R. Towles Estes died February 21, 1860).

Bettie Tyler (Elizabeth) (Wilkinson) Ewing, (born February 4, 1834, Limestone County, Alabama); youngest daughter of Judge John Blackwell Wilkinson and Alice Strother Blackwell; siblings: Reuben, James Ray; married John Ewing on June 3, 1854, Burleson County, Texas; children: infant; (Bettie Tyler Ewing died April 6, 1857).(11)

John Ewing, unmarked grave, (born circa 1831, Alabama); married Bettie Tyler Wilkinson on June 3, 1854, Burleson County, Texas; children: infant; married Josephine McMurray of Tennessee (12) on January 5, 1859; (13) farmer; John Ewing died-date unknown).(14)

Infant Ewing, unmarked grave (born date unknown); child of John Ewing and Mrs. Bettie Tyler Ewing (died date unknown).

Annie Independence Goodwin (born July 4, 1848, Louisa County, Virginia); perhaps daughter of T. t. and Winnie Boxly Goodwin; (15) (Annie Independence Goodwin died September 1, 1864).

E. Goodwin (dates unknown); perhaps Edgar Goodwin; born Louisa County, Virginia; son of John D. and Sarah A. Goodwin. (16)

J.D. Goodwin (dates unknown); perhaps Jane D. Goodwin; born Louisa county, Virginia; daughter of John D. and Sarah A. Goodwin. (17)

John D. Goodwin (born August 17, 1820, Louisa County, Virginia); married Sarah A. Goodwin of the Old Dominion; children: Jane D., Henry, Florence, Jack, Joseph, Alfred, William, Sallie, Edgar; (18) came to Burleson county, Texas in 1856; (19) farmer, Trustee, Brazos Bottom Baptist Church; (20) (John d. Goodwin died August 30, 1870, Burleson County, Texas).

J. S. Goodwin (dates unknown); perhaps Jack or Joseph Goodwin; born Louisa County, Virginia; sons of John D. and Sarah A. Goodwin. (21)
