Alexander FLANAGAN
Alexander Jackson “Alex” Flanagan was born 6 November 1806, in Jackson County, Georgia. He married Abigail Briton Tippen on 3 February 1829, in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Abigail was born about 1814 in South Carolina to John and Elinor Weems Tippen. Alex, Abigail, and family moved to Lafayette County, Mississippi and were in Mississippi during the 1850 Census. The family later moved near Tunis in Precinct #2 of Burleson County, Texas. On 31 October 1884, Alexander Flanagan donated five acres to Providence Baptist Church near Tunis in Burleson County, Texas.
Alex and Abigail had the following children:
1. John J. Flanagan, born 18 December 1830 in Georgia, died 18 November 1842.
2. S.P. Flanagan, born 9 April 1833, in Georgia, died on October 1834.
3. Susan Elizabeth Flanagan was born 30 January 1838, in Georgia. Susan married William Coleman about 1851 in Mississippi. William was born about 1819 in Georgia. Some of their children are Elizabeth “Bettie” born about 1853, John A. born about 1854, Francis “Fannie” born about 1856, Martha “Mattie” born about 1858, Thomas born about 1860, William born about 1862, Edward born about 1864, and Joseph born about 1868, all born in Mississippi.
Mr. William Coleman died 28 June 1906, and Susan died 27 January 1919. William is buried in Providence Cemetery in Burleson County, Texas.
4. Sarah Elizabeth Flanagan, born 30 January 1838, in Georgia, married James M. Thomas on 8 December 1870, in Burleson County, Texas. James was born in 1833 and was a Sergeant in Company A, Wauls Texas Legion, C.S.A. Mrs. Elizabeth (Flanagan) Thomas died 1 April 1875, and James died in 1919. They are buried in Providence Cemetery in Burleson County, Texas.
5. Richard J. Flanagan, born 19 February 1840, in Mississippi, served in Company D, 1st Mississippi Cavalry, C.S.A. Richard married Mary E. Summers in 1860 in Pittsboro, Calhoun County, Mississippi. Mary was born in 1837 and died in 1901. Richard died 12 September 1920. They are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Yalobusha County, Mississippi.
6. William A. Flanagan, born 12 August 1842, in Mississippi.
7. Ellender “Ellen” Flanagan, born 10 August 1844, died 21 January 1885.
8. Edmund H. Flanagan, born 12 September 1848, in Mississippi, married Annie O. who was born in August 1849 in Mississippi. Their children were Charlie, born in November 1882; and Mabel, born in December 1890. Annie died in1929 and Edmund died in 1941. They are buried on Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville, Burleson County, Texas.
9. James Cicero Flanagan, born 9 April 1851, in Mississippi, married Miss Anna E. Ivy on 20 June 1875 in Burleson County, Texas. Anna was born in 1856 in Alabama to J.J. and Eliza Ivy. James and Anna’s children were William, Jarrett, and Lottie in the 1880 Census of Burleson County, Texas. Anna died and James married Miss Martha E. Kimble on 24 June 1890, in Burleson County. Martha was born 28 April 1857, and died 1 February 1917, and was buried in Providence Cemetery. James Cicero Flanagan died in 1925 and was buried in Providence Cemetery.
10. Elijah Luther Flanagan, born 4 July 1853, in Mississippi, married Bettie Fisher on 30 September 1886, in Burleson County, Texas. Francis E. “Bettie” (Fisher) Flanagan was born 16 November 1865, in Mississippi, and died 4 April 1905. Elijah Luther Flanagan died 26 September 1913. They are buried in Providence Cemetery. Their children are Luther A., born in Sept. 1887; Mary E. born in March 1891; Pearl A. born in April 1893; Hallie G. born in October 1896; Ada born in 1901; and Paul born in 1904.
Alexander Jackson Flanagan died 25 September 1885, and Mrs. Abigail Flanagan died 12 July 1888. The graves of Mr. And Mrs. Flanagan have not been located but, they are thought to have been buried in Providence Cemetery, Burleson County, Texas since Alex gave land to Providence Church.
