County Courthouse

Brown County Courthouse, Texas
Located about one and a half miles east of the current courthouse, the county's first courthouse was a log building built about 1856. Unfortunately, the site was not suitable because no water could be found that was drinkable, so the building was moved in 1859.

The building was enlarged in 1865 to form a two-story structure. The second floor served as the Masonic Hall. When title to the land became a question, the courthouse was moved again to its present location. It was replaced by a larger, two-story courthouse finished in 1877 but that one burned in 1880.

The accompanying photograph was taken in 1885 of the newly completed fourth courthouse.

The current building is the fifth to be used by the county. Completed in 1917, it cost the county $85,000.
