Original, Grantee of “Santo Tomas de la Blanca tract.

Family Tree of Gil Zarate y Ballarena, who died between 1850 & 1860 Original Grantee of the Santo Tomas de la Blanca tract of land in Hidalgo County, Texas.  Gil Zarate y Ballarena was twice married.  His first wife was Refugio Perez (Now dec’d). She bor him three children, viz:

  1. Pilar Zarate, Male: dead
  2. Manuel Zarate (Male: dead,
  3. Marta Zarate (female) dead.

Pilar Zarate, first child and son of Gil Zarate married Josefa Salinas. (Now dead) and by her had eight children named as follows:

  1. Juan Zarate (Male) alive; resides with his wife, Amada Garcia in La Alameda Texas, and has two children named Jose Zarate (Male) and Ygnacio Zarate, (Male)
  2. Maximo Zarate, Male; alive resides with his wife Dorotea Gonzales in la Alameda, with his five children Evangelina Zarate (female), Rosa Zarate (female), Petra (female), Candelario Zarate (Male) Simon Zarate (Male)
  3.  Pilar Zarate, Male; alive resides with his wife Manuela Sanches and his four children ie: Jose Zarate, (Male), Calletano Zarate (Male), Petra Zarate (female) and Macedonia Zarate (female) in La Alameda.
  4. Manuel Zarate Salinas, (Male) alive in La Alameda
  5. Damaso Zarate (Male) alive in La Alameda, with his wife Santos Zarate and his four children, ie: Juan Zarate, Carlota Zarate (female), Antonia Zarate (female), and Andrea Zarate (female)
  6. Lucia Zarate, dead.
  7. Santos Zarate (female) alive; lives with her three children Epimenio Gonzalez (Male); Juan Gonzalez (Male) and Juana Gonzalez (female) in Los Villareales Ranch, Tamaulipas, Mexico. (Said Santos Zarate being the widow of Eusebio Gonzalez, dec’d.
  8. Rafaela Zarate, female; dead.

 

Lucia Zarate, daughter of Pilar Zarate, who was a son of Gil Zarate, married Juan Cantu Garza (Now dead) and bore him four children.

  1. Serapio Cantu, Male; dead
  2. Fecundo Cantu, Male; lives with his wife Refugio Contreras and his seven children (ie: Wenceslado Cantu, Saturnino Cantu, Berto Cantu, Juana Cantu, Julia Cantu, Mateo Cantu, Petra Cantu and Hilario Cantu) in Los Villareales Ranch Mexico.
  3. Ricardo Cantu; Male: alive
  4. Juan Cantu, Male; alive..

 

Serapio Cantu, who was a son of Lucia Zarate, who was a daughter of Pilar Zarate, who was a son of Gil Zarate, married Patricia Longoria (now living) and had by her five children, Viz:

  1. Lucia Cantu, female; Minor; lives in Los Villareales, Mexico.
  2. Juan Cantu, Male; alive; Minor, lives in La Grulla
  3. Jose Cantu, Male; alive; Minor, lives in La Grulla
  4. Jesusa Cantu, female; alive, lives in La Grulla
  5. Francisca Cantu, female alive, lives in La Grulla
  6. Emelio Cantu, died young and after father’s death.

 

Rafaela Zarate, daughter of Pilar Zarate, who was a son of Gil zarate, married Desiderio Aguilar (Now alive in Los Villareales, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and left two children by him as follows:

  1. Hilaria Aguilar, female; Married to Virginio Garcia and lives in Los Villareales, Mexico.
  2. Daria Aguilar, female; Married to Hipolito Flores and lives in Los Villareales, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

 

Manuel Zarate, second son of Gil Zarate by his first wife was married twice: His first wife (Now dec’d) bore him four children, viz:

  1. Rosaria Zarate, female; dead,
  2. Tomas zarate, Male; alive in San Miguel, Mexico
  3. Felix Zarate, Male; dead, died unmarried and without issue.
  4. Secundilno Zarate, Male; dead.

 

Rosaria Zarate, daughter of Manuel Zarate, who was a son of Gil Zarate by his first wife, married Juan Antonio Ruiz (Now dead) and bore him two children named as follows to wit:

  1. Jose Angel Ruiz, Male; lives in Penitas in Texas
  2. Geronimo Ruiz, Male; still living, No issue.

 

Secundino Zarate, son of Manuel Zarate, who was a son of Gil Zarate, married Petra Diaz (Now dead) and had by her eight children, viz:

  1. Miguel Zarate, Male; alive in San Miguel, Mexico
  2. Pedro Zarate, Male; alive in San Miguel, Mexico
  3. Hermenegildo Zarate, Male; alive in San Miguel, Mexico
  4. Dionicio Zarate; Male; alive in San Miguel, Mexico
  5. Leandro Zarate, Male; alive in San Miguel, Mexico
  6. Fafaela Zarate, female; alive in San Miguel, Mexico
  7. Micaela Zarate, female; alive in San Miguel, Mexico
  8. Concepcion Zarate, female; alive in San Miguel, Mexico

 

Said Manuel Zarate (Son of Gil Zarate) contracted a second marriage with one Josefa Villarreal (Now dec’d) and by her had two children; named as follows, to wit:

  1. Eliseo Zarate, Male; alive in Tabasco, Texas
  2. Juana Zarate, female; alive in San Miguel, Mexico

 

Marta Zarate, third child and daughter of Gil Zarate by his first wife, was married to Francisco Elizondo (Now dead) and had by him the following named children to wit:

  1. Tiburcia Elizondo; female, alive – resides in Refugio, Mexico
  2. Manuela Elizondo, female, alive – resides in Todos Sander, Mexico
  3. Esequia Elizondo, female, dead
  4. Mariana Elizondo, female, dead
  5. Doroteo Elizondo, Male; dead
  6. Jesus Elizondo, Male; died 1875 left family probably dead.
  7. Nicanor Elizondo, Male; Now living in Todos Sander, Mexico

 

Said Tiburcia Elizondo, being the widow of Agapito Garza, dec’d by whom she had the four following named children, viz:

  1. Juana Garza, female, alive in Refugio, Texas
  2. Crecenciana Garza, female; dead
  3. Calletano Garza, Male; dead
  4. Julian Garza, Male; dead

 

Esiquia Elizondo, daughter of Marta Zarate, who was a daughter of Gil Zarate married Placido Rodriguez (Now dead) and had by him two children named as follows, to wit:

  1. Nicolas Rodriguez, Male; Now living in Jesus Ma. Ranch, Mexico.
  2. Placido Rodriguez, Male; Now living in Rancho El Potrero, Mexico

 

Mariana Elizando, daughter of Marta Zarate, who was a daughter of Gil Zarate, never married and died without issue.

 

Doroteo Elizondo, who was a son of Marta Zarate, who was a daughter of Gil Zarate, died unmarried, without issue and intestate.  See note.

 

Nicanor Elizondo, son of Marta Zarate, who was a daughter of Gil Zarate, is alive and resides with his wife, Modesta Sosa, and his five children, viz: Eulalio Elizondo, Anastacio Elizondo, Valente Elizondo, Tomas Elizando, and Maria Elizondo in Todos Santos, Mexico.

 

Gil Zarate y Ballarena, aforesaid, contracted a second marriage with one Dolores Gutierrez (now dead) and during coverture with said Dolores Gutierrez, acquired the tract of land in Hidalgo County called “Santo Tomas de la Blanca” by grant from the State of Tamaulipas dated November 22, 1835.  By his said second wife Gil Zarate had five children named as follows:

  1. Felipe Zarate, Male; dead
  2. Mercedes Zarate, Female, deceased
  3. Decidoro Zarate, Male, deceased
  4. Dionisio Zarate, Male; dead
  5. Apolinario Zarate, Male; dead

 

Felipe Zarate, son of Gil Zarate by his second wife, married Santos Vela (now dead) and by her had one son, named:

  1. Jacinto Zarate, Male, dead; (See foot-note No. 2)

 

Jacinto Zarate, son of Felipe Zarate, who was a son of Gil Zarate, survived his parents (See Note)

 

Mercedes Zarate, daughter of Gil Zarate, married one Nepomuceno Gonzales (Now dead) and had by him one child named Manuel Gonzalez Zarate, who died in infancy, before his parents.  Said Mercedes Zarate having survived her said husband and child.  She dying some years subsequent to their death in 1872 Mercedes died.

 

Decidoro Zarate, son of Gil Zarate by his second wife, married Concepcion Saens Pena (Now dead) and had by her three children, viz:-

  1. Matias Zarate, Male; alive; resides with his wife, Ygnacia Cantu Longoria, and his seven children (Named as follows: Felix, Valeriano, Tiburcio, Cecilia, Jose, Novertin and Martin) near El Salado, Mexico.
  2. Alcario Zarate, male; alive, married Ma. Ygnacia Cantu Longoria and lives with his 13 children in Potrero, Mexico. (Said children being named as follows: Eulogio, Matias, Braulio, Lucas, Prudencio, Simon, Bartola, Francisca, Marta, Rita Maria, Epifania & Paula)
  3. Cesario Zarate, Male; alive in El Protrero, Mexico, not married.

 

Dionisio Zarate, son of Gil Zarate, married Viviana Farias (Now living in Tamaulipas, Mexico) and had by her two children named as follows:-

  1. Juan Manuel Zarate, Male; alive; lives in Mesquites, Texas.
  2. Juana Zarate, female; alive in Los Mesquites, Texas.

 

Apolinario Zarate, son of Gil Zarate, married Angela Barrera (Now dead) and had by her one child named Gonzalo Zarate, who died in infancy before either of his parents in 1857.  Said Apolonario Zarate dying in 1863 and said Angela Barrera in 1870.  After the death of her first husband, said Angela Barrera became the mother of two children named as follows:-

  1. Manuel Olivares Barrera, Male; alive in Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
  2. Ynocencia Barrera, female; resides in Alice, Texas with Gabriel Garcia her husband.

 

Note                                        Remarks:-

 

Note No. 1. Said Felipe Zarate, son of Gil Zarate, original grantee, contracted a second marriage with one Pabla Montes, who is now living in Todos Santos, Mexico.  No children were born to their mrriage.

 

Note No. 2. Said Jacinto Zarate, married Ygnacia Longoria (Now dead) and had by her two children, viz:-

  1. Austancia Zarate, married to Juan Zarate.
  2. Doroteo Zarate, Male; alive in Mesquites, Texas.

Said Jacinto had also an illegitimate son called Higinio.

 

Esiquia Elizondo, daughter of Francisco Elizondo was married a second time to one Vicente Olivares (Now living) and had four children named as follows, to wit:-

  1. Leopoldo Olivares, female alive in Camargo, Mexico
  2. Gustava Olivares, female;                                      
  3. Samuel Olivares, Male;                                         
  4. Hester Olivares, female;                                       

 

Doroteo Elizondo, son of Francisco Elizondo who was a son-in-law of Gil Zarate, married Daria Lopez (Now dead) and by her had a son:

Fortunato Elizondo, Male; alive (or supposed to be)

 

The above history was furnished me by another party, also an heir of Gil Zarate.

Dolores Gutierrez, after death of Gil Zarate, married Felipe Lopez, who died.  Then Dolores married Agustin Tijerina, who survived his wife.

Felipe Barrera, being duly sworn on oath desposes and says that he is a resident of the village of Valades in the State of Tamaulipas, Mexico, of the age of 56 years, and a farmer by occupation.  That he has been intimately acquainted all during his life with the family of Gil Zarate and that he knows that said Gil Zarate was twice married.  That he first married one Maria Refugio Perez.  That his second wife was one Dolores Gutierrez, and having carefully examined and having had read over to him the foregoing family tree or history of the said Gil Zarate y Ballarena, says that the same is true and correct in every particular, to the best of his knowledge, belief and information.  Felipe Barrera

I James H. Edwards, Attorney-at-law, Hidalgo, Texas do hereby certify that the foregoing family tree of Gil Zarate y Ballarena was prepared by me after seeing all the data possible from several old members of said Zarate’s family, among whom may be mentioned Tomas Zarate and Eliseo Zarate.

I further certify that as shown by the Church Records of Camargo, Mexico, said Gil Zarate married his first wife Maria Refugia Perez on June 14, 1802.  She died on October 12, 1813, said Zarate married his second wife D9olores Gutierrez, on or about Sept. 5th 1814.  She is supposed to have died in December 1878 after the death of said Gil Zarate, and of her second husband, Felipe Lopez, having survived her her (sic) husband Augustin Tijerina but no children except the five (5) sons and daughters by said Gil Zarate or their heirs.
