Ark-La-Tex Genealogical Association Presents a Seminar, August 8, 2026, on Land Records and Wills

Welcome

Brooks County is located in the Rio Grande Plain. (If Texas was a boot, Brooks is in the toe.) The county seat is Falfurrias in the northeastern quadrant of the county, named for founder Edward Cunningham Lasater's ranch, La Mota de Falfurrias. The county is named for James Abijah Brooks, who helped modernize the Texas Rangers and bring them into the 20th century. Brooks County was created in 1911 when James Brooks asked for a new county to be formed. Originally, the area was home to ranchers including two of the largest ranches in Texas, the Mariposa Ranch and part of the King Ranch.

Brooks County is 60 miles north of the Rio Grande, the only reliable water source.
In memory of Shirley Cullum, USGenWeb volunteer and TXGenWeb State coordinator, 2002-2019.
