History of Brazoria County
Parent County: Old
Mexican Municipality
Organized: 1836 County Seat: Angleton Brazoria
County was first occupied by Karankawa Indians before the
Anglo-American colonization. Artifacts have been recovered
from
the Karankawa Indians that date back as early as 450 A.D.
Most of
the Indian population were driven out of the area to the Rio Grande by
1850 due to many battles with colonists. This area was
selected
was selected by Stephen F. Austin for a settlement and for his Old
Three Hundred land grants (land grants issued to settlers in Austin's
first colony). Notable battles include: Battle of
Jones
Creek and Battle of Velasco.
Brazoria County was one of the first counties to take its name from the Brazos River and was established on December 20, 1836 with Brazoria as the county seat. In 1896 the county seat was transfered to Angleton. Diana J. Kleiner, "Brazoria
