BOWIE COUNTY
(Pop. 68, 412)
In northeastern Texas bordering Oklahoma and Arkansas. Named for James Bowie, Alamo hero. First attempted settlement
of the area was made by Ben Milam, close friend of David G. Burnet, who went before the legislature at Monclova in 1835
to request that a land commissioner give tittles to Red River area settlers. Created from red River County in 1840.
Bowie County has been its present size since 1846 when Titus and Cass Counties were detached from it. Organized in 1841.
County seat - Boston.

BOSTON
Nineteen miles west of Texarkana. Named for W. J. Boston, first store operator in the area. Town was established prior
to the Texas Declaration of Independence. Boston was made county seat when the county was organized in 1841. Originally
located slightly more than three miles from it's present site, the courthouse was moved to present location when a
survey revealed that Boston was not within five miles of the center of the county. The first settlement became known as
Old Boston.
Most of the business of the town moved to a location a few miles north in 1869 when the Texas and Pacific Railroad
was built through the area. All three sites are within a four mile radius.

MAUD
(Pop. 951)
Fourteen miles southwest of Texarkana in southern Bowie County.
Named for Maud Knapp, daughter of Samuel D. Knapp, first postmaster and donor of land for town site.
One of the earliest settled areas, extensive settlement was discouraged because of Spanish claim to the land,
lawlessness and outlaws from the Neutral Ground area. Arthur G. Wavell attempted to locate a colony in
the area in 1825 but the project did not succeed.

MOORES
Named for Colonel Charles Moores on whose property the mail route was located in 1841. Also known as
Mooresville. An early church was organized here in 1842 by a Methodist circuit rider, J. W. McKenzie.

OLD BOSTON
In central Bowie County. Named for W. J. Boston who operated the first store in the area.
Established about 1830, it is the oldest of the three towns called BOSTON within a radius of four miles.
(See Boston and New Boston) Once the County seat when the county was organized in 1841 until a survey
revealed that the site lacked three miles of being within five miles of the center of the county.
The courthouse was moved to a new location and the original location became known as Old Boston.

REDWATER

Thirteen miles southwest of Texarkana in southeastern Bowie County. Originally called Ingersol at the time the town

SOUTH TEXARKANA

SPRING HILL
Ten miles north of DeKalb in te western part of Bowie County.
In 1940, it was a rural school community with a population of forty.
SULPHUR
Ten miles south of Maud. In 1940 it was a rural community and fishing camp with population of twenty.
An order established a post office was rescinded on February 25, 1904, when all three men appointed
to be postmaster declined the appointment.

TEXARKANA
(Pop. 33,000)
Named for its location on the state line between Bowie County, Texas and Miller County, Arkansas, a short distance
above the Louisiana boundary. Texarkana's history and development are unique because of its two state location.
The site of Texarkana was once a Caddo Indian Village located on THE GREAT SOUTHWESTERN TRAIL which
for hundreds of years was the main line of travel from Indian villages along the Mississippi River to those of the
South and West. Remnants of this early civilization are seen in Indian mounds located nearby.
The city of Texarkana was established on December 8, 1873 at the junction of the
Cairo and Fulton and Texas and Pacific railroads.
This is the only post office in the United States located in two cities, serving two states and showing two states in its
postmark (by a special act of Congress about 1935), it is not surprising that confusion still exists as to its
location.
Early postal records were made more difficult to find because the post office was shifted back and forth between
two states until, at the insistence of Texas, two post offices with two postmasters existed for a time. The death
of one of the postmasters resulted in the combing of the post offices and a building was erected at the present
site, directly on the state line - half in Arkansas, half in Texas. Office originated in Lafayette County, Arkansas.
