Gresham-Wright Cemetery | Access to the cemetery is on the east side of FM 2022, opposite the junction with Anderson County Road 174. The cemetery is north of here about 2400 ft. It is in bad condition, with four of the Wright family headstones broken. It is overgrown with brush and we did not find the headstone for Josephine Ray. Hallum Cemetery is
a very old cemetery and has been almost completely
destroyed. Only the markers in and around the trees still
stand. On Highway # 19 from Athens to Palestine. From Athens, take the second road on the right after the Carroll Springs Cemetery sign. From Palestine, take the first road past Bradford on the left. Some distance from #19 in a field, on top of a knoll with trees in open pasture, across from an old house. House on right and cemetery on left. Note: Other members of the HANSON family are reported to be buried in this cemetery, but there are no markers. |

was the burial spot for the now extinct town of Kickapoo.
I'm told it was 1.5 miles south of Frankston on the

Directions to cemetery: On north side of ACR 328 near its

fenced in stand of trees. It is about 90 by 90 feet and
enclosed by a chain link fence with a small metal gate on
the east side. Property is owned by Mr. Curt Winkler. No
access except through private property. Slaves were
buried outside the fence and indications are they are on

Newsom Cemetery | From Slocum, drive
east on Hwy. 294, turn right on FM 228, then right on
Anderson County Rd 1212, then left on A.C.R 1213. The
cemetery is 9/10 of a mile on the right. It is
immediately within the fence that borders the road but
above the road level on an embankment. This cemetery is
probably less than a mile from the Anderson
County/Houston County line. Newsom Cemetery is an inactive, rural cemetery surrounded by a barbed wire and hog wire fence. There are five graves with headstones, but it is believed there are some unmarked graves. |

Newton Cemetery | Newton Cemetery is
an African-American cemetery established in 1904 when
Sidney Newton, an African-American farmer, and his wife
sold 2 acres of their land to the Ben Anderson Church
Community to be used as a cemetery. The first burial was
that of E. W. Anderson on March 10, 1904. "The
caskets were transported from the area churches by a
hearse to..." a certain point where "the casket
was placed on a horse-drawn wagon, to be carried the rest
of the way through the woods and up the hills to the
cemetery... The cemetery served these Foster Community
churches, Jasper Baptist, Jerusalem Baptist, and Bethel
A.M.E. for more than sixty years. There are approximately
fifteen headstones and more than eighty unmarked
graves...The last burial was that of Ivory Baker in

From Slocum, drive
3 miles east on State Hwy. 294 to the intersection with
Farm Road 323 and turn left. Drive approximately 1 and
1/2 miles to County Road 1223. At this intersection there
is a state highway sign indicating the turn onto County
Rd 1223 to Providence Cemetery. There is also a highway
sign indicating the Texas Historical Marker at the
cemetery. Turn right on County Road 1223 and you will
find the cemetery and Providence Church at the end of the
road, approximately 6/10 of a mile. |
