High School
Band Concludes 4-Day Camp at TP&L's Lake Trinidad
from The Malakoff News
Friday, September 8, 1950
Members of the Malakoff School Band returned Thursday from a
four-day
encampment held on the grounds of the Texas Power & Light
Company's
generating station at Trinidad, September 4-7. The sixteen boys
and girls
were accompanied by Band Director and Mrs. B. B. Scholl and their
baby
daughter, Susan, who is the band mascot. Three band mothers -
Mrs. Ralph
Moore, Mrs. LeRoy Brannon and Mrs. Claude Humphries - attended
the camp
on a rotation basis.
The purpose of the encampment, Mr. Scholl explained, was
primarily for
practicing marching routines and conducting full band rehearsals
as well
as sectional rehearsals. "However," he said, "the
youngsters enjoyed the
recreational facilities of the grounds, particularly swimming.
Washer and
horseshoe pitching, ball games and quiet games provided
recreational
activities that balanced the practice sessions."
The facilities at Trinidad, Mr. Scholl said, are ideal for this
purpose. The
quarters are comfortable and convenient and at the same time
removed
from outside distractions which tend to interfere with rehearsal
schedule,
he said.
The Malakoff Band, which is only a little more than a year old,
had its first
work out of the season when it led the Homecoming Parade on
Monday.
Its performance at football games in the league which included
Malakoff,
Trinidad, Brownsboro, Eustace, Kemp, Frankston, Mabank and Troup,
is
one of the highlights of this interscholastic program.
In addition to directing the Malakoff band, Mr. Scholl is also
band director
of the Henderson County Junior College at Athens.
Those attending the encampment were Pat Humphries, Howard Hardy,
Batty Jane Brannon, Bobby Smith, Jack Fowler, James Barnett,
Darla
Robertson, Bette Moore, David Moore, Eddie Nokes, Bobbie Hull,
Peggy Hatton, Peggy Spurlock, Edwin Gibson, Letha McFarland,
Clyde Humphries, Jr., Mr. And Mrs. Scholl and Susan, Mesdms.
Moore, Brannon, and Humphries.
