Alamo Ward Grammar School
As time passes, sometimes the only record of a significant and
important entity in a community is hidden away on a written
record. So it is with the Alamo Ward Grammar School in Malakoff.
Many grandparents and great-grandparents of today who grew up and
were educated in Malakoff can recall a red brick building that
sat in the middle of 4 or 5 acres of land south of the John
Jackson home and across the street and east of the Carney Kirby
residence. The building had few amenities. The restrooms were of
the outdoor variety and were located some 30 or 40 yards from the
building. There was no gymnasium, but the playground was used for
outdoor games. This playground was one of the few places in
Malakoff that the goat horned grass burr grew. One encounter with
that demon during a recess or noontime game of softball or
football remains vivid in the minds of those who experienced it.
During the middle to late 30's Jesse Green was the custodian who
kept the coal fire burning and the floors clean and well-oiled.
He probably helped a lot of children remove those goat horned
burrs from their bare feet.
M. P. Willis was a very respected superintendent in Malakoff for
several years. W. T. Davis was Principal of Alamo Ward Grammar
School until he left for military service. Miss Cally Johnson, a
local young lady, taught second grade for many years. Most people
remember Miss Cally as the teacher with red hair at Alamo Ward.
Perhaps, someone has a photograph of Alamo Ward. All those who
attended the red brick school house have a mental picture of it
because that is where many Malakoff girls and boys started on
their road to formal education. It is good to remember a place
that was important in the life of a community, but as time passes
necessity requires change and Alamo Ward Grammar School is no
longer in existence. This remembrance, however, brings little
yearning for that 30 or 40 yard dash to the school outhouse at
Alamo Ward.
