Smothers Family Reunion

J. W. Smothers superintendent of the St. Paul Industrial Training School
near Malakoff will attend a reunion of the Smothers family in Chicago this week.

The Smothers family was one of the most outstanding colored families in
Alabama. The mother and father are now deceased. The father served as
treasurer of his Sunday School for more than fifty years and was a trustee
of The Peoples Village School for the same period of time. He was a farmer
and landowner.

Pearl (Smothers) Larson, the youngest sister, is at present teaching a session
at New York University in New York City. She was appointed by President Roosevelt
as assistant superintendent of schools in the Virgin Islands and later was appointed
superintendent by President Truman.

She is said to be the only colored woman to receive that appointment. She holds a
doctor's degree form Columbia University.

The late Dr. Charles W. Smothers, was a physician and surgeon. Laura (Smothers)
Jones was a school supervisor in North Carolina and a teacher in Chicago.
She is a graduate of Alabama A. & M. College.
