Poison Mash For the Grasshoppers
County Agent John Moosberg has had his attention called to the
appearance of grasshoppers in Kaufman and Navarro counties. He
therefore requests that every one preserve the following formula
for combatting this pest should they make their appearance in
Henderson county, as it is in the most practical remedy for the
pest.
Whaeat bran-----25 lbs.
White arsenic or Paris Green ----- 1 lb.
Lemons or oranges -----6 fruits
Low grade can of sorghum molasses -----2 qts.
Water -----8 gals.
Mix the bran and poison thoroughly while dry. Dilute the molasses
with the amount of water as named, squeeze the lemon juice in to
this diluted molassws, then grind the rind of the lemons or
oranges with a meat chopper and add this also to the liquid. Then
mix the liquid thouroughly with the poison bran mixture. After an
even mixture has then been obtained add more water and mix well
until a mash is obtained so that when squeezed in the hand it
readily falls apart.
Grasshoppers feed in the morning and as the bait loses its
attractiveness when dry, it should be applied so as to be as
moist as possible at this time. If to be spread along a fence-row
to kill the hoppers as thy come into the field, it may be applied
late in the evening. Where the hoppers are at work over the
field, however, the application will have to be made over this
field, and as it may dry out during the night, because the ground
is hot and dry in the evening, it may be well to wait until
morning about sun-up to apply. When necessary to apply to a
field, sow in strips several rods wide alternating with unsown
strips of about the same width.
Do not omit the fruit, using as directed, this is necessary to
attract the insects.
