Fragments of Child's Skeleton Unearthed In Field Near Athens
Fragments of a skeleton plowed up in a field on the Rufus Graham farm, eight miles North of Athens, Friday morning by Arnold Graham, were examined Saturday by Dr. R. H. Hodge and declared to be the bones of a child. Speculation was rife as to whether the bones were those of a white child which had been buried during the past fifty or those of an Indian child whose lifetime preceeded by many years the comoing of White settlers to this section of the country.
The belief that the bones were those of an Indian child was advanced by the finder who told how many Indian arrowheads and pieces of pottery had been picked up in recent years near the spot where the bone fragments were exposed by the plow. Two well-developed teeth were among the skeleton fragments.
