Plans Made For Revival
Aug. 1 to 13
Athens Weekly Review
July 28, 1966
By Atheleen Youngblood
July 26-
Noticed in last week's Review the announcement of an
undenominational revival meeting Aug. 1 through 13 at 8 p. m. at
Meredith Campground with
Rev. Lucile Meredith officiating. I hope to attend some if
possible. My children, Cherrlyn, Karl and Sylvin Whitehead have
many ancestors buried in the
cemetery near the church or tabernacle where the services are to
be held. In fact, the Meredith was where it first got its name.
Miss Julia F. Meredith was born
in 1850 at Walton, and married a Bill Whitehead from Collin
County. They are my children's great-grandparents. Eber and
Caroline Meredith were born in 1824. They were the parents of
Julia F. Whitehead, who is among the old timers buried at the
campground. I do not know if they are buried there or not, but I
would
think so. This is one of the oldest churches in this part of our
country. According to this record, these old settlers were here
142 years ago, but just how long the church has been there I do
not know. Many years ago there was first a brush arbor by the
cemetery. Tell all your friends about the old time revival and
come out.
Evangelist Lee is conducting a revival this week at China Grove.
His sons. Phillip and Steve, are spending part of this week with
Mike Daniel.
Mrs. Gladis Wilkerson of Dallas, visited her daughter, Mrs. Aubry
Daniel, over the week end. She attended church with the Daniel
family also at China Grove
while here.
Bud Neill ate supper Saturday night in the P. B. Neill home.
Sunday visitors in the H. T. Youngblood home were Mrs. Pansy Odom
and little son, Kim, of Dallas. She is a sister of Betty
Youngblood.
We are indeed sorry to learn Pat Eves of Mabank isn't well and
under the care of a physician. We hope he soons feel better.
Vernon Hunter had quite a week out at his farm last week. He had
a lot more timber bulldozed away. He resides in Dallas, but was
out here quite a lot while
the work was in progress.
Some of our youngsters went camping and fishing Monday night.
Hope they catch lots of fish.
Recent visitors in the Edd Rice home were Charles Rierson and
wife and daughter, Mandy of Athens. Willis didn't come along. He
was gone to Possum
Kingdom Lake on vacation for the month of August. He is a Boy
Scout.
E. R. McLemore visited a short while Saturday afternoon in the
Della Youngblood home. He said they were busy pulling watermelons
to take to the market.
Tomato and pea picking is also in order of the day for many of
our neighbors around here.
Mr. E. A. Rice bought more land joining our Featherston Park. So
he was busy last week clearing more land. They plan to add a
swimming pool at a later date.
He got his tractor stuck and so deep he had to call a wench truck
to pull him out. But he finally made it.
Mr. Kenny Vaughn and wife Lethie visited in the Della Youngblood
home Friday night. They have just recently purchased a nice, late
model car. They said
they had already tried it out. They went to church at Rock Hill
in it. I understand a revival will begin there at a later date,
but the time hasn't been set yet.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hood visited a while Friday in the E. A. Rice
home. They have a pea patch on the Rice farm, and went over to
see about peas also.
Mrs. Rita Slayton spent last week in Rockwall visiting her
brother, Dan Slayton, and family. Dan Slayton and family also
visited his parents over week end,
Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Slayton.
Sunday visitors in the D. W. Slayton home were Ira Buckalou and
family and Elmer Buckalou of Dallas. They are brothers of Mrs.
Opal Slayton. With them
was a son, Dan Slayton, and family of Rockwall.
Mr. and Mrs. Clabe Carnes of Athens, and Mr. and Mrs. Bon Randell
of San Francisco, California, were Saturday visitors in the E. A.
Rice home. Mrs. Randell
is a sister of Clabe Carnes and was born in Henderson County.
Mr. John Fuller and wife, Sally, visited recently with the
Youngblood and Whitehead families. They are truck farming, too,
and have been selling most everything in farm products on Market
Square.
The County-Line Church plans to attend the Revival Services at
China Grove Wednesday night instead of holding their prayer
meeting on that night. We are sure they will receive a hearty
welcome and enjoy visiting their neighboring church.
We are happy to say the Rev. Alton Dodd is feeling much better
and filling his regular week end appointments at his church every
Sunday and Sunday night.
He is on vacation this week.
Sunday visitors in the Fred Miller home were H. V. Lancaster,
Raymon Fladd and wife, Annie Bell, of Athens. Mr. Fladd robbed
Fred Miller's bees for him
and got quite a bit of honey. Other visitors were Margaret Jones
and Louie Jones, Willie Ray Jones of Memphis, Arkansas, and
Raymon Jones and wife
and little Beth of Marshall. Mr. Miller continues to show
improvement from his recent operation and is up and going.
Mr. Willie Jones and wife May, and their son, Ray Jones, and wife
are spending this week in George Jones' home here. Willie Jones
is a nephew of Mr. Jones.
I. G. Meredith (Izeth) of Athens gave Ben Bass some nice large
fish. Mrs. Bass cooked the fish and she and Ben really enjoyed
them. She also wished to thank
Bro. Alton Dodd for his recent phone call to her and her husband.
Mrs. Lucille Neill recently visited with an aunt, Pearl Hall, at
Whiteoak, not far from Longview. She lived at Bethel many years.
Mrs. Winnie Floyce Lillie and son called her parents Mr. and Mrs.
Ben Bass, Sunday night. She lives in the state of Oregon.
They enjoyed a nice telephone visit.
Quite a few of our friends have been canning fig preserves this
week and peaches.
Mrs. Ada Miller has two kinds of Indian peaches. One kind are
unusually large peaches and great for canning.
The other, a smaller peach, is used for pickled peaches.
Mrs. Joyce Miller of Longview recently visited with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bass.
Miss Jeannie Sue Malone, our niece, has been employed for the
Bell Telephone Company in Dallas ever since she graduated this
spring from Athens High School. She likes her job fine.
Everything is burning up our way. We would really enjoy a good
rain. Many of our roses have died and some shrubbery.
We just don't have water to spray them daily.
Captain and Mrs. Glynne McGregor and three children of Tacoma,
Washington, were recent visitors in the home of his grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs.
J. T. Mixon and other relatives. He is being transeferred to
Germany on August 4.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Davis of Cottonwood visited in the P. B.
Neill home recently.
