Salesman Dies In Car Mishap

Martin Eugene Pettis, 37, of Odessa, was killed early Friday when
his auto crashed into a tree 3.3 miles east of Murchsion on the
Tyler highway.
State highway patrolman said he lived about 30 minutes and was
pronounced dead upon arrival at Henderson County Memorial
Hospital.
Officers said Pettis, a salesman for the Beyer Company, a soft
drink firm, was traveling alone toward Tyler and apparently went
to sleep. They said the car
ran off the left shoulder of the roadway and that the left side
of the car struck a tree.
The car was demolished.
The body was brought to the Carroll and Lehr Funeral Home in
Athens pending arrangements.
He is survived by his wife; one son, Rickie Pettis, 11; his
parents, two brothers, J. F. Pettis and Lige Pettis, both of
Overton; four sisters, Mrs. A. O. Gilmore
and Mrs. R. D. Hickman of Overton, Mrs. E. R. Herring, Odessa and
Mrs. W. L. Dean of Cincinnati,Ohio.
He was reared at Overton and had lived at Odessa about four
years.
He was Henderson County's seventh traffic fatality so far this
year.
There were only five in 1955.
