PRESBYTERIANS AT ATHENS

----------
Cumberland Church Celebrates Its Semi-Centennial.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Athens, Tex. May 15 -- On the second Sunday in May, 1855, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Athens was organized by Rev. Robert Hodge, father of Dr. J C Hodge.  Yesterday the second Sunday in May, 1905, the members of this church held a semi-centennial service, conducted by Rev. R W Benge, the pastor.  The other congregations in the city attended this special service.
Rev. Benge read a historical sketch of the church from its organization.  There ware nine members in the organization.five males and four females, only one of whom survives, a Mr. Hinds, who now lives near Chandler, this county.  Owing to age and feeble health, Mr. Hinds was unable to be present yesterday, but wrote an interesting letter, much of which was read to the audience.   During the fifty years the church has had eighteen different pastors, only nine of whom are living.   At the close of the service the minister requested that if there was any one in the audience who was present at the organization of the church to please stand up.  In the large audience only one person, Mrs. Lucy Neff, responded.  The service was largely attended and interesting throughout.
