Hortontown Cemetery is located in Comal County on State Highway No. 46, one mile north from its intersection with Interstate Highway No. 35.  On the property is located the oldest Lutheran Church in Texas.

Editor's Note:  In April, 1968, the old church, St. Martin, was moved a short distance to the Hortontown Cemetery and was restored as a  permanent memorial to the German settlers who organized the church in 1850.  A pamphlet was prepared entitled "History of St. Martin Church" to commemorate the occasion.  It think it is important to extract some of the information contained in this pamphlet:  "In the year 1851 the Evangelical Luthean congregation at Neighborsville, Guadalupe County, Texas, erected a house of God, and the first worship services were conducted there in the German language by the Rev. Pastor Theo. Kleiss, the pastor at that time. . .Of interest are those names of members of the Church of St. Martin who were present at a business meeting of the congregation held on August 16, 1852:  Heinrich OELKERS, Willhelm OELKERS, Conrad OELKERS, Chris OELKERS, Ludwig HEINEMEIER, Heinrich HEINEMEIER, Chris HEINEMEIER, Ferdinand WILLIG, H. Lutheran Church also has copies of the four Constitutions (of St. Martin) and some of the early financial records.  Parts of these and a portion of the interior wall are on display in a glass topped case in St. Martin Church."
 
For those who might do research on residents of Hortontown, it might be well to mention that this section was in Guadalupe County in the early uears, but boundaries were changed in the late 1800's and this area has been in Comal County since then.  Many of the early vital records therefore, are found in Seguin, Texas, rather than New Braunfels.

 There is a large gap between Friedrich and Dorothea but I am guessing that is where the Lessman's are buried.  I so badly want to get someone to do a grave witching at that spot.  The Lessman's were living with Friedrich and Sophie Kruse at the time of their death.  Also there may be a child buried with Albert and Marie Louise Scahefer Vorheier's
