Statement on History
Of Spangenberg Cemetery

Christoph and Elizabeth Spangenberg and their five children came from Prussia
on the ship, Timeleon, leaving port on 23rd of November in 1845.  It took them
approximately three months to land at a port in the gulf of Texas.  They traveled to
central Texas stopping in the area now known as New Braunfels, Texas
Christoph is listed as one of the founding colonists fo New Braunfels, Texas  {1}
Christoph's name appears on the bronze plaque inside Landa Park in New
Braunfels, Texas commemorating the founding colonists.

Christoph and Elizabeth remained in New Braunfels until their deaths.  Christoph
died October 3rd, 1874 {2}  Elizabeth died in 1895 {3}  Christoph's grave is the earliest
marked grave in the cemetery.  Records show that the cemetery is on the land
belonging to Hermann Spangenberg, one of his sons. {4}  The cemetery was
established with burial of Christoph in 1874.

On Christoph's tombstone is inscribed the words: Emigrated to Texas from
Kleinschneer, Germany on the ship Timeleon 23rd November, 1845 with Captain
Ferwald.  Translated here from the inscribed German for clarification.

Bernhard F. Spangenberg was Christoph's grandson.  His date of death is clearly
marked on his headstone as 1907 {5}  Bernhard is my great uncle.

The other head stone is marked with the name, Hugo Heun.  Mr. Heun was born
October 11, 1900 and died November 2nd, 1914  {6}  It is unknown at this date as to
his relationship to the Spangenberg family.

There appear to have been other burials in the cemetery.  There are depressions
indicating burial sites.  There are also more foot stones than there are head
stones.  There is no obvious evidence of vandalism but the fence that surrounded
the cemetery has been cut down.

In January 2003, I began the search for information on my mother's family the
Spangenberg.  I have used the internet, county records, library records.
historical society records, and information obtained from neighbors to the
Spangenberg property (now owned by Mrs. Graham). The Fischer neighbors

directed me to the site of the Spangenberg Cemetery.  I have attempted to clean the cemetery and restored it to its's present state (see photos).  My hope now is to protect it for all time with the Historic Texas Cemetery Designation.
