Careening crazily toward Bandera down the south slope of Bancera Pass, a gravel-filled dump
truck near noon Monday crashed head on into a Chevrolet sedan injuring three women, one
fatally, two seriously.
Admitted to emergency at Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital were Mrs. Myrtle Stevens, 74 where
she died at 4:25 p. m., from a fractured skull, her daughter,Mrs. Evelina Garrett, driver of
the car, both of Bandera, and Mrs. Kate Schultz, Boerne. Mrs. Garrett, mother of Stevens Forrest,
chief radio operator for the Texas State Department of Public Safety, Boerne, and Mrs. Schultz were
both seriously,but not critically injured.
Held under arrest in Bandera pending charges, is Adan Del Bosque, 17, Latin-American driver of the truck,
who gave his address as 124 Gurero street, San Antonio. Tire marks on the highway plainly showed Del Bosque
was traveling the left side of the road when the crash occurred.
The tremendous force of the impact completely dislodged the gravel-filled bed of the truckfrom the body. Front
ends of both cars were demolished.
The dump truck was hauling gravel from a pit in Kerr County to an air strip being constructed for the Continental Oil Co. on the Purple Sage ranch near Bandera. The three women were enroute to Kerrville.
The accident happened about a quarter-mile toward Bandera from the Kerr-Bandera county line.
Texas Ranger L. H. Purvis,Bandera County Sheriff Johnnie Ferris and a State Highway patrolman investigated Del Bosque.
