Funeral services for Vernon Merritt, 52, native of Kerr County and former peace officer here and at Bandera, were held Tuesday from the Plummer Funeral Home in Bandera. Burial was in Nichols Cemetery, near Ingram, Tuesday afternoon.
Mr. Merritt died Sunday morning at 5 o'clock at his ranch, near Bandera, a few hours after he had been stricken with a heart attack.
Born at Hunt, Mr. Merritt grew to manhood in that community. He served several years at State game warden in Kerr County and later was deputy sheriff here under the late Sheriff J. T. Moore. After moving to Bandera County about 17 years ago he served as deputy sheriff there and also was engaged in ranching. He leaves a host of friends throughout the Hill Country.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Alice Crider Merritt; parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Merritt of Hunt; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Crider of Hunt and Mrs. Roy Leinweber of Mountain Home; five brothers, Owen, L.K. and Ross Merritt of Hunt, Clyde Merritt of Houston and Bill Merritt, who is in the Army, stationed in Louisiana.
