"The Texas Legislature abolished the office of County Clerk. On May 3,1873 a bill was enacted by the Texas Legislature: "The District Clerks of this State" were to keep a record of all births in their counties. The District Clerks registered births from 1873-1876. When the office of County Clerk was re-established in 1876, the requirement to register births was dropped." Birth records began to be recorded again in about 1903.
