At a meeting of the citizens of Bandera County held at the Court House in said County, July 10th, 1861, for the purpose of organizing a Military Company for home protections, Hon. E. M. Ross was called to the chair and W. G. Goodwin, chosen Secretary.
On motion it was resolved, that a Committee of three be appointed to draft Resolution expressive of the sense of this meeting with regard to certain reports derogatary to the character of the citizens of this county as good and loyal citizens of the South. Messr. W. G. Goodwin, P.D. Sauer and O. B. Miles were designated as said Committee and reported the following preamble and resolutions. Whereas, Reports have been circulated detrimental to the character of the inhabitants of this county as good and loyal citizens of the South, thereby bringing Bandera county into discredit: and, Whereas, while many of the neighboring frontier counties voted against, Bandera county cast its vote for Secession, and whereas, although being on the frontier and requiring the services of every man at home to defend the families and property of its citizens from a merciless, savage foe, yet Bandera county has already furnished for the Regular company, eighteen brave, active and intelligent men, of fully one third the entire voting representation. Therefore: Resolved: That we denounce all such reports as malicious slanders. Resolved: That having no sympathy with Abolitionism in any of its forms we pledge the services of every citizen of the county in defense of our country and homes against invasion from all foes, red or whites. Resolved: That we challenge the State to show a county which has done or will do more in proportion to its ability in defending our Common Country against the aggressions of all enemies, native or foreign. Resolved, That copies of the above preamble and resolutions be forwarded by the chairman of this meeting to the Galveston News, San Antonio Herald, and Ledger and Texan, with request to publish. On motion the above were unanimously adopted. A company of Home Guards was then organized consisting of 30 members. Capt. O. B. Miles, 1st Lieutenant, Robert Ballantyne, 2nd Lieut., Thos. Brady. - Muster and drill every Saturday.
EDWARD M. ROSS, Chairman.
